How to Become a CNA in California – The Requirements

If your looking to obtain your CNA degree in California, then you MUST meet all the requirements. Unlike the Bachelor of Nursing programs which could take 4-years to complete, the California CNA training requirements can last anywhere between 6-8 weeks depending on the school your attending. However, no matter how long the program itself, the requirements to successfully achieve your CNA certification is the same.

Let’s go over the requirements in further details.

1) To become a CNA in California you MUST be 16 years old or above. If you are under the age requirement, you CANNOT apply for your CNA license in the State of California.

2) You MUST successfully complete an accredited CNA program in California. These are programs that have been approved by the California Department of Public Health. We will provide you a list of accredited CNA classes in California in this guide. All programs that offer CNA training will have both theory and clinical modules so meeting the minimum hour requirements will NOT be a problem for students.

3) When you are enrolled, you will be asked to fill out a criminal record clearance form. This form is the CDPH 283B. At the same time, you will be asked to fill out the BCIA 8016 form which is the REQUEST FOR LIVE SCAN SERVICE. Both these forms will be filled out and requested after enrollment into a CNA training program.

4) After you have completed the CNA training program in California, you will need to write and pass the Competency Examination. We have provided details regarding the nurse aide competency exam in the next two sections.

5) Please allow 60 days for the California Department of Public Health to receive your results. There are NO processing fees for the application.

If you are already a Certified Nursing Assistant and need to renew your license, then please follow the guidelines in the next section.

The California CNA License Renewal Process

If you are looking to renew your CNA license after expiration in California, then follow this procedure.

1) Start by completing the Renewal Application (CDPH 283C). Certified Nursing Assistants MUST renew their license every 2-years as per California Department of Public Health requirements. CNA’s may also renew their license anywhere up 2-years after date of expiration.

2) You are required to complete and submit the CDPH 283A form along with the CDPH 283C. This form needs to be filled out showing your 48-hours of in-service training. This must be completed within 2-years of your certification There are many options available to you to complete these required hours. Please view the following form which outlines how the minimum hours MUST be fulfilled. A maximum of 24 of the 48 may be obtained through approved online CDPH online training. More information can be found here.

3) All forms can be mailed to the address on the form or faxed over to this number – (916) 552-8785

4) There are no processing fees for renewal applications.

If your CNA has been expired longer than the 2-years maximum, you will need to repeat the CNA Requirements in California. This means attending an approved CNA program in California and passing the competency examination.

We recommend you don’t wait until your CNA license has expired because this can complicate the renewal process. Did you know you can renew your certificate up to six months prior to the expiration date on the certificate? So, start this process earlier to avoid any delays.

How to Transfer CNA License to California?

For those looking to do a CNA transfer to California from another state, you need to complete the initial CDPH 283B form and have your fingerprints done in California utilizing a Live Scan Agency. For Live Scan, please complete the BCIA 8016 form and submit both to the California Department of Public Health.

You also need to submit a copy of your out-of-state CNA certification.

Make sure you bring proof showing you were working under the supervision of a licensed health professional within the last two years. For example, paystubs or W2 are acceptable. You may NOT have to submit your proof of work if you recently got licensed as a certified nursing assistant in your state. Please consult CDPH regarding if proof of work is needed.

The Verification of Current Nurse Assistant Certification (CDPH 931) (PDF).  Part I of the CDPH 931 is to be completed by the applicant and Part II is to be completed by the endorsing state agency (the state you are coming from).

Verify CNA License in California

Anytime you want to verify your CNA license in the state of California, you can do that by visiting the following website – CBPH Verification. Follow the process by adding the required information.
